5 Labor Day Happenings for Shores Residents

You know what’s just around the corner? Our residents’ first holiday at Shores! That’s right, summer is winding down and Labor Day weekend starts this Friday, August 31! For the Shores community, that’s pretty exciting stuff because we’ll be smack dab in the middle of the best Labor Day celebration spots. If you’re new to Shores and wondering how you should ring in the holiday, here are a few long-weekend ideas to help you make the most of your Labor Day plans (without having to get in your car!).

1. Celebrate at Shores

Sparkling Community Pool

You live in a community with just about everything at your fingertips, so why not take a mini-vacay right at home! Invite some friends over and hang out by the pool, soak in a Jacuzzi, barbecue some dinner and end the evening with cocktails on the Sky Terrace. Now that’s some worthwhile long-weekend activity.

2. Walk to Mother’s Beach

Just because Summer 2013 is officially over doesn’t mean you can’t hang out by the ocean. Spend the weekend soaking up the rays, kayaking or picnicking with friends. When you live at Shores, the only effort you need to expend on a Labor Day weekend is strolling across the street to Mother’s Beach.

3. Bike to the Park

Here’s a Labor Day idea: hop on your bike and pedal up to a park for the day. If you go to Yvonne B. Burke Park (about 1.7 miles), you can stop at Tony P’s for carryout and then have a picnic party or head a little farther to Burton W. Chace Park (about 2.1 miles away) and barbecue up some lunch. You can also feel free to bring your pooches along to either park (just keep them on their leashes) and let them enjoy the long weekend, too.

4. Attend a Yacht Party

Head up to the Fantasea One Yacht at 13509 Fiji Way and get in on the legendary Labor Day Yacht Party. Advanced tickets for Monday, September 2 are sold out, but you can still get tickets at the gate. Check in for ticketholders is at 2 pm, so get there early to secure your spot on the yacht!

5. Catch a Fisherman’s Village Concert

Fisherman's VillageAnother Marina-exclusive Labor Day weekend option is to catch the concerts at Fisherman’s Village. The venue is only 2.5 miles away so Shores residents can easily bike or walk to this oceanside spot for the Sullivan & Hall R&B band on Sunday and Susie Hansen’s Latin Jazz band on Monday.

Will you be living at Shores by Labor Day? What are your plans to celebrate your first holiday at the community? Let us know!

All Hands on Deck for the MDR Cruise ‘N Brews Festival

Beer lovers rejoice—because on Saturday, June 22, the LAX Coastal Area Chamber of Commerce is putting on the 2013 Marina del Rey “Cruise ‘N Brews” festival aboard a 550-passenger Hornblower yacht. For just $50 a person, you and your closest brew-loving pals can board “The Entertainer” yacht and set sail with nothing to do but sit back and sample some of the best Craft Beers around. The whole Shores team will be there as well, sampling the goods from 40 breweries including Duvel, Stone Brewing Company, Weihenstephan, AleSmith, Anchor Brewing, and a bunch more. There will also be a pretzel necklace included with admission and additional food will be available for purchase on board.

The Entertainer

And since we’ll all be in beer nirvana, here’s another fortuitous coincidence: the Marina del Rey WaterBus is opening that same day! That means you can sample all of the beer you want without worrying about getting behind the wheel of your car. Just catch the WaterBus from one of the eight convenient WaterBus Stop locations, and for just $1.00, the WaterBus will take care of the transportation angle.

Are you in? Alright, here are all the “Cruise ‘n Brews” details:
