Shores Spotlight: The Best Marina del Rey Summer Happenings

Summer Concert at Burton Chace Park

One of the coolest parts of living at Shores — aside from the beautiful apartments and amazing amenities — is the location. Yep, it’s no mistake that we chose Marina del Rey as our lifestyle basecamp because, frankly, this town rocks. There’s so much going on (especially in the summertime!), and Shores’ residents are smack dab in the middle of all of it. Think about it: The MDR Farmer’s Market is just around the corner, Beach Eats is right at Mother’s Beach, and all of the sweet Burton Chace Park summer events are a short Waterbus ride away. All in all, we have the quintessential setting for an awesome coastal summer Shores people — and we want to make sure you don’t miss a thing. So take a look at all of the stellar summer opps waiting for you in your sweet Marina hometown.

1. Load up on Fresh Fare at the Farmer’s Market

Via Marina and Panay Way ♦ Parking Lot #11

Unless you have an aversion to amazing farm-fresh food, you know about Marina del Rey’s year-round Farmer’s Market. It’s right down the street from Shores (next to the Cheesecake Factory) and goes on every Saturday from 9 am to 2 pm.

2. Get Your Fitness On at Burton Chace Park

Burton Chace Park ♦ 13650 Mindanao Way

Walking for fitness is way more fun when you have a strolling partner to challenge you, and the free Walking Club at Burton Chace Park is the perfect way to do it. The Department of Beaches and Harbors sponsors the club and it takes place every Tuesday & Thursday from 10:30 am to 11:30 am— all you need to do is RSVP at (310) 305-9595 to participate.

For those of you who can’t take that morning hour away from your workday, never fear because that same Department also offers FREE outdoor group workout sessions at the park every Wednesday night from 5:15 pm to 6:15 pm! RSVP to that same number if you want to join in the workout.

3. Experience Old Fashioned Day in the Park

Burton Chace Park ♦ 13650 Mindanao Way

If you’re one of those people who stops in awe at the sight of a cherry vintage convertible cruising by, then you must clear your schedule on Sunday, July 26th to check out the Old Fashioned Day in the Park. The fun runs from 10 am to 3 pm, where you’ll see some gorgeous vintage yachts and restored classic cars that are positively envy-worthy…  with some cars dating all the way back to the 1920s. Totally cool, totally free.

4. Catch a FREE Outdoor Summer Movie or FREE Summer Concert

Burton Chace Park ♦ 13650 Mindanao Way

Another great Burton Chace Park attraction is the summer movies by the waterfront. If you live at Shores, you can just pack a picnic, hop on the Waterbus at Mother’s Beach, and disembark at the park just in time for one of four films showing through August. The upcoming schedule includes The Lego Movie on Aug. 1/Back to the Future Part II on Aug. 15/Casablanca on Aug. 29. And yes, they’re all FREE!

Most Thursdays and Saturdays, you can also head to Burton Chace Park for free music — another great excuse to pack a picnic and blanket, grab some friends, and chill to great live performances (including some major blasts from the past like KC & the Sunshine Band who are playing on July 25th!). Symphonic Thursdays are happening on July 30 and August 13, 2015/Pop Saturdays are July 25 and August 8 & 22

5. Chow Down at Beach Eats

Mother’s Beach ♦ 4101 Admiralty Way

Summertime Beach Eats is definitely one weekly event Shores peeps love… especially since it’s right at Mother’s Beach! If you haven’t gone yet, what are you waiting for? Awesome gourmet food trucks, friendly neighbors, dog friendly — yes, please! Don’t forget, it’s every Thursday from 4:30 to 9 pm.

6. Get to Know MDR with a 50th Birthday Historical Harbor Tour

Hornblower Cruises & Events ♦ 13755 Fiji Way

With Marina del Rey’s 50th birthday happening, this Historical Harbor Tour is a really cool opportunity to learn more about the marina while cruising on Hornblower’s classic wooden yacht for 45 scenic-filled minutes. And the cost? Hold on to your hats — $1 per guest. How can you pass that up? The tours are happening through September 7th every Saturday, Sunday, and on Labor Day.
